Shafei named Scientific Exchange Fellow at Swiss National Science Foundation

Bridge Engineering Center Structural Research Engineer Behrouz Shafei was named a Scientific Exchange Fellow at the Swiss National Science Foundation in 2022.

The Scientific Exchange allows Swiss-based researchers to invite colleagues abroad for a research visit to Switzerland, among other activities that help establish international collaborations. Shafei’s fellowship has entailed researching advanced structural materials and 3D printing strategies at the Structural Engineering Research Laboratory of Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology.

The strategic objective of this fellowships is to facilitate and optimize global scientific collaborations and exchanges. The activities aim to foster cross-border cooperation to the benefit of Swiss science and contribute to the increase of research capacity in Switzerland and abroad.

Shafei, who is also an associate professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at Iowa State University, focuses his research on the design and assessment of structures subjected to natural and manmade hazards, in addition to the development of data-enabled strategies for the inspection and maintenance of aging structural components.
