About the research

Bridge deck cracking is an important issue in Iowa since it leads to chloride intrusion and corrosion resulting in loss of service life. Fiber-reinforced concrete may help to mitigate deck cracking.

The objective of this research is to confirm the effectiveness of using fiber in high-performance concrete (HPC) mixes to prevent or reduce early age cracking in bridge decks. Researchers will have the opportunity to test the modified mixes in on one or more bridge decks.
